This program enables workers to receive much-needed funds for personal or professional use without the burden of traditional monetary repayment. Instead, they can repay their loans by collecting and delivering waste materials to Ecobarter. This not only alleviates financial pressure but also encourages greater participation in waste collection, promoting environmental sustainability.

The organization routinely run a 3 months fast track literacy program that gets these waste pickers from not being able to string 2 words in English to basic introduction & greetings. Then they have a quarterly skills development workshop where life skills like Health & safety, financial management, business development are thought. ..

Mamuda’s Journey: From Waste Picker to Collection Business Owner, Farmer, and Now a Real Estate Owner in His Hometown
Take the example of Mamuda Abubakar, a former waste picker at Ecobarter. He joined Ecobarter in 2021 when he came to Abuja. Through the loan program, Mamuda accessed funds that he used to start his own collection business and a small farming project in his village. By repaying the loan with collected waste, he was able to manage his finances without stress. With the additional support from Ecobarter’s skills and literacy development programs, Mamuda learned modern farming techniques and basic business skills. Today, his farm is thriving, providing a stable income for his family. he was barely making 15k, and now makes over 100k profits monthly from waste collection and even more gains from his farming.
